Spring and the love of a mother . . .

Mom: The glue that holds the home together . . .  It suddenly occurred to me today that perhaps it's no mistake that Mother's Day is celebrated in the Spring, that wonderful season of love, hope, youth and growth. Did you know that the earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses?  More recently, mothers were celebrated in the 1600s in England. The day was called Mothering Sunday where children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their mother.  On the occasion, servants, apprentices and other employees staying away from their homes were encouraged by their employers to visit their mothers and honor them. Traditionally children brought with them gifts and in other nations have observed similar days.…

Watercolor Memories and Christmas home portraits ... There is nothing like a white Christmas, especially when you add a warm yellow glow streaming out the windows and reflecting on the snow, cheerful Christmas lights and wreaths and a sinking red sun silhouetted against the starkness of bare winter trees.  I love the way the twilight plays on the snow as the wind dies down and the world is still. Enjoy some of my 2017 Christmas home memories, all which were commissioned by clients. Stunning House Portrait Subjects: 12 points that make a home art inspiring!

How many art inspiring points does your home have? I am lucky enough to receive new commission requests for house portraits every week, however I like to chose my own subjects as well and create collections of portraits that architecturally depict specific geographic areas.  From time to time the owners of these selected homes have asked how I came to choose their house.  I started thinking about this recently. I figured there’d be about a handful of art inspiring elements, but once I got into it I came up with 12!   I have listed these below along with examples some of my favorite portraits from around the country that I feel reflect particularly well one of the 12 individual points. (Click on any of the portraits below to make them larger.) The…

Magical homes in the snow As the cold winter months linger on we often find ourselves yearning for warmer weather, however artistically these frosty days provide a soft beauty and tranquility that can not be matched in any other season. I thought you might enjoy a little tour of some charming winter subjects, but with a difference. In each case these snowy portraits are one of a seasonal pair, showing the contrast between winter and summer, spring and fall.   Lansing, MI - Winter Lansing, MI - Summer    Alexandria, VA - Winter    Alexandria, VA - Spring     Wellesley, MA - Winter    Wellesley, MA - Fall    Georgetown, Washington DC - Winter   Georgetown, Washington DC - Summer    For those living in colder clients, consider having me create a winter…

Georgetown's Healy Hall in Pen and Watercolor Not so long ago I was commissioned to create a painting of this beautiful historic landmark. [caption id="attachment_6590" align="aligncenter" width="606"] Healy Hall, Georgetown University[/caption] I thought you might like to know more about the history of Healy Hall and Georgetown University.  I found the  Washington DC National Register of Historic Places  website to be very informative and much of the information below is from this source. Founded in 1789, Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic University in America. It has been administered by the Society of Jesus since 1805.  The first buildings were built around the "old quadrangle," including Healy Hall, which was constructed between 1877--1909. It was designed by Smithmeyer and Pelz.  Rev. Patrick S. Healy took on the Healy Hall project and…

Architectural paintings of homes – Before & After

Some of my most challenging watercolor house portraits . . . I'm making a plug for all artists who like me, make their living from ORIGINAL hand-crafted one of a kind art.  Yes I am talking about the "old-school" way of doing things where only ONE painting was created of a subject, brought about by the skilled hands of artists and crafts-people alike. People today often talk about simply "photo-shopping" things away, or creating "digitally-modified" art.  My view is that while this is the "easy" way to do things, there is too much reliance on this route. Here one good reason why.  Have a look at this stunning Queen Anne home in Alameda CA which I recently completed. It was built in the 1870's and has been in the family…
