Hand-Painted House Portrait – Oldest B&B in California!

Living History: Pen and watercolor painting of 1852 Gothic style home

For those of us currently housebound by snow, ice, and bitter cold, I wanted to share something a little uplifting: architectural images and hand crafted house art that radiates warmth and reminds us that spring is not as far away as it seems.

Recently, I was honored to be asked by the new owners the Shaw House Inn to create a house painting of this charming beauty. Nestled in the heart of Ferndale, California, the Shaw House Inn isn’t just a place to stay — as the oldest Bed & Breakfast in California, it’s a living piece of history. Ferndale itself is a beautifully preserved Victorian village, and the Shaw House stands as its oldest residence, offering guests a truly unique blend of heritage, comfort, and charm.

As always, I created this art piece in two distinct stages. The first step is the detailed pen drawing of the home, which the owners will use for marketing and promotion.

This is followed by a watercolor painting of the home on top of the drawing.  I have perfected this pen and watercolor house portrait technique for my architectural subjects as I feel it is the best method to truly depict the architectural beauty and detail of homes – especially historic ones.

Adding the watercolor is really the icing on the ice as it brings forth the true personality and vibrance of the historic home.  It also allows me to capture the lush greens and glorious color of the garden, trees and surroundings, in addition to the architectural detail of the home itself.  I take great pride in including all the intricate details within each and every house portrait I create.

A Home with Stories to Tell: History of Shaw House Inn

The story of Shaw House begins in1854, when pioneer Seth Louis Shaw built what would become the first permanent home in Ferndale. Shaw and his brother Stephen had arrived in the region in 1852, laying the foundations for the settlement’s growth and its distinctive Victorian character.

Originally designed in the Carpenter Gothic style—a romantic architectural form known for its steep gables and ornate trim—the house played many roles in the early community: it served as Ferndale’s first courthouse, post office, and even as the local polling place.

Over the decades, the property remained in the Shaw family before undergoing careful restoration and transformation into the bed and breakfast guests enjoy today.

Recognized for its historical and architectural significance, the Shaw House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving its legacy for future generations.
