Welcome to my Craftsman house portrait gallery.
An outgrowth of the Arts and Crafts movement, Craftsman homes were a reaction to the mechanism of the Industrial Revolution. In contrast to late 19th century Victorian homes, Craftsman houses emphasized handworked elements. They emphasized horizontal lines with gable roofs that extended past the exterior walls. Main features were clean lines, open living spaces, simple ornamentation and the use of natural building materials, like brick, wood siding, stucco and cobblestone. One usually thinks of a Craftsman home as a low-slung bungalow. However, this classic style has been reinterpreted, and Craftsman design features have been integrated into many contemporary homes. Craftsman style homes are popular throughout the United States.
